The 5 Questions to Ask in a Job Interview

Lots of coaching clients ask me what can they could ask during an interview. It is best to have a list of question prepared based on the moment.

Maybe due to emotions or to lack of time you will be asked if you have any questions, and you want to make sure you can answer something more important than the classics “Who do I report to?“ or “Is this a new role or a replacement” type of question.

I put together 5 questions that can come in hand, based on how the interview goes and the role you are applying for:

  1. What high-impact contributions can I make in my first 90 days?
Shows you are focused on immediate value creation while revealing the team’s highest priorities and pain points.
  2. What is something that might surprise me if we start working together? (tip from Simon Sinek)
This can often reveal team and company weaknesses. It is important to qualify the company to see if they are a good fit, too.
  3. Thinking back to your most successful hires, what made them different compared to everyone else?
Uncovers their definition of excellence while giving you a blueprint for standing out from day one.
  4. How can I be involved in projects that are critical to the strategic future of the organization? (tip from Chriss Voss)
Demonstrate you are a team player AND you desire to make a meaningful impact
  5. Let’s say you hire me. What key performance indicator would demonstrate my success before my annual review?
Make interviews visualize you in the role and clarify what truly matters for success.
